the dukes nose

Mum and Dad took me on a bushwalk to the Dukes Nose lookout, the Maori name for this place is Kaiaraara rocks.

To get there we first had to walk around the Whangaroa Harbour on another track. This track was called the Wairakau Stream track.

On the way there the weather was really sunny.

At the very beginning we had to walk up a big four wheel drive track to get to the boot washing station where we had to clean our feet to help protect the Kauri trees.

We walked through the bush and saw lots of birds. There were Kereru, Tui, and Fantails, lots of mushrooms and toadstools too.

After about 30 mins we got to the stream which we had to cross.

The stream was very low which made it easy to cross. There was a log that you can stand on and look at the Cliff. After crossing the stream I started to get hungry and tired. Lucky for me lunch wasn't far away.

After 20 mins of walking we got to the Lane Cove Shelter. This was where we had lunch which Mum had carried in her backpack.

After lunch and a little rest with the birds we headed up the track towards the Dukes Nose. I did not think it was going to be easy because the sign said a high level of fitness was needed, the sign also said it would take 1 hour to get up there.

It was steep and slippery.

Dad let me hold onto his pack sometimes so he could tow me up the hard parts. The last part of the track goes straight up big rocks. There were metal poles in the rocks for us to hold onto when going up, I thought this was fun, but Mum got a bit scared because I was going so fast.

When I got to the top I was so tired, but it was worth it because you can see for miles in every direction. You can see how far you have come, lots of the Whangaroa Harbour and right out to sea.

The water was so blue and light green and the fancy boats looked really cool on it.

I hope one day our class can walk up there so I can show my friends.

The end.
